Cracked acrylic

Ok for another subject thought.

Rookiecalls had a bad expierence and a lot of work down the tube. Now the question.

How many acrylic calls have you actually seen do this.?? I like most have seen many and subject to a lot of abuse that never did this so that is another question. Where did the product come from, the USA or is it an imported that has a different make up of acrylic.

Drop on concrete, slam a door on one to be expected, just wondering.

I haven't personally seen any calls do this.  I've only seen pictures of it.

I haven't haven't had any bad experiences with acrylic yet.  But I've been pretty careful with it to not drop it or bang it on something real hard.

Is clear acrylic more prone to doing this?  Does it happen to a certain color more than others?

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

This was a response to another thread on the CCO forum about something similar:

"Bob,
after reading my post over again, oops.
I was referring to damage to the acrylic.  I saw a video of a guy who flame polished the edge of a 3/8" square, let it cool and then poured isopropyl alcohol over it.  within seconds it produced fracture lines all through the edges.  It looked like the flame polishing produced a mechanical stress within the material and then the -OH weakened the bonds allowing for stress fractures.

"

Watch the video, and you can see how this probably happened.

So the moral of the story is don't let some flaming drunk play with your duck calls!

That or only sell the flame polished ones to non-drinkers.... :punk:

Next time I will remember to just add a comment for you!

I am still trying to figure out why this just surfaced.  I have no idea as to how long flame polishing has been done, but I know it has been for awhile.  Just from the posts on here and CCO it has been sometime since this was "discovered" by the custom callmakers.  I am guessing that flaming has to have been in use for several years, not just the last 2 or 3 but more than 3 years.  You would think there would be some sort of warning by the sellers of the acrylic, they cannot be blind to what people are using their products for.
