Here's where we've been talking about them recently Mutt.  I think if you were only going to get one tool, I'd get the 1/2" round pen tool, but that's just my thoughts in my great, 1 week experience!

I dont know about you guys but I hate sanding.

  I like throwing major chips, turning off the lathe the first time to see what was hiding the block, and I like my final sand/buff.     Everything else is just cause I have to.

J Sizzle / Parker, thanks for the input.  I went down to look in my machine shop aboard the ship and found several carbide tools for our metal lathe.  There are some brand new triangle shape carbide tools exactly like you guys are using.  They fit into the tool holder for the metal lathe so I will have to make a handle and possibly weld the carbide tool to a long handled screw driver or something to make a suitable handle.  The actual tool I have is about 3˝" long... no comments please.... so making a usable wood cutting tool should be simple.  I can't believe carbide is that much better... but I'll soon know for myself.

Thanks again,

Mutt

When you get back in you can come see me and my set up and I will be more than happy to let you give my carbide tools a run. I think the round is a much better tool for all around use. But if you already have access to the triangle tip then get it fixed up and run it through some wood.

Not trying to hijack Parker, but these are my homemade carbides.

(l to r) first three are made with the solid carbide tipped lathe tools like Mutt was talking about , last two are with inserts, I messed up and ordered inserts with a negative rake, make sure you get them with positive rake, I have some more ordered that will be in this week. I attached to handles and installed golf grips, I even have an expensive "Ping" chisel :devil2: Atach them any way you feel comfortable in using.

I know this was talked about a while ago, but I am searching to build my own carbide turning tools. The problem I am running into is there are so many different inserts that I don't know where to start. I already have the ones that are brazed onto the shank, I am looking for the round insert and the triangle insert like the ones you have pictured here. I think these are Als cutters? If anyone has a source and part number it would be appreciated. Thanks. Jeff

PM sent. Parker are you using carbide cutters? I know you like to use dymalux and was wondering if you knew how well carbide works on turning square dymalux or spectraply into dowels? I really don't have the means to trim the corners off the square stock so it really costs me a lot of sharpening time. Show you how much I know, you may not even be able to use carbide inserts for roughing. Any helps or ideas would be helpful. Thanks to everyone on here and Merry Christmas.

Did you buy it in square stock?  Curtis sells it in round stock, and you are able to get to making a call with the round stuff VERY quickly.  I only buy round stock now.

Yes, you can use those carbide tools to round things off.

I would still recommend taking the hard corners off with a band saw prior to chucking the blank up though.  Those hard corners are tough on all of your equipment.

Those carbide tools will cut any types of wood from what I have seen.

I dont cut any corners off any of my wood stock. I let the carbide tips do all the work. It does it really easy. If it helps you and I got my round tip from woodcrafters. Im sure you can get it cheaper somewhere else but I was in the store and had some extra cash that day sooooo I went for it and have not regreted it. I only got the tip and made the rest and Im real happy with it.

Is there such thing as getting a small, flat tip?  I'd SURE like to have a carbide tool to cut lanyard grooves with.  That would help me out a TON.  Think of all the time you would save trying to get in that little groove to sand.   :2guns:

Better yet, one the width of a lanyard grove, but with a rounded tip, to give a nice rounded bottom to the grove. That is what I've been looking for. It would also make a great tool for cutting beads.
