carbide: turn baby turn!
« on: October 29, 2009, 11:57:44 AM »
:up1:  I'm liking these new carbide cutters!  Still getting used to them, but I'm having fun.

You've seen the center call before.

I'm just a barrel turner when it comes to duck calls.  I can't get past the sound of an ECHO double timber.

Looking good Parker. Yep, I like the Echo inserts myself. My hearing is so bad I can't tune a call. I can't tell the difference between a single reed and a double reed. They both sound exactly the same to me. Hell getting old.

Those look great!!!  Nice finish

I use my carbides 90%+ of the time now - I hate to sharpen :down1:

The Echo's look and sound good - it took me forever it seemed before I could get a decent toneboard to sound as good.

You probubly know this - but I found that if you get alittle dull with the carbide tips - no need to turn'em every time - just hit it with a cheap diamond rasp lightly just a couple times.  I think I got mine at Woodcraft for under $10.  They last forever!  More turn less hassle - did I say I hated sharpening!

Great tip Pat. I have not had to turn my tips yet. I got one of those stones you are talking about, maybe I will hit the tip to it in the morning.

Thank you Brandon.  Its a shape that's easy on cutting and sanding.  Its not mine though.  A friend helped me with it.  It fits your mouth well too.

Maybe its just me, but when I try the carbides they dont seem to cut as easy as my regular tools. My go to tool for acrylic is a home made scraper made from a walmart wood chisel. lol

Great looking calls Parker! I use homemade tools with carbide inserts, they work great on acrylic.

Question from a "carbide challenged" turner.  Which is the best carbide tip for standard turning, i.e. duck and goose calls?  I looked at the carbide tools at Things Western and there were a few different tips to choose from. Just looking for what you carbide users prefer.

Thanks,

Mutt

Mutt the round tip will be great for you to start out with. I have the round and triangle tips all I need now is the square. It will help you more than you can imagine. They cut so smooth it helps with the sanding. You can start out with a higher grit and less tearout in the wood means less sanding time!!!!   I dont know about you guys but I hate sanding.
