« on: October 28, 2009, 04:28:52 PM »
My nephew is big into hog hunting and ask me to make him a hog call. I am not sure the reed that goes in it. I have made a few grunts and duck calls and thought I would give this a try for him. If you guys could point me in the right direction on the reeds. Thanks guys.

If you do a search, you will find a lot of threads on hog calls.  I dont know for sure if we ever really decided there was a proper reed for them?  I think Marvin, Dogcatcher, suggest the sound of a corn feeder on an E caller at one time

That's the best I can tell you.

In my opinion hog calls are the world's second biggest lie.  Care to guess on the first one?

What I am going to do is buy a commercial one, record a sound file, and then take it apart and measure the reed.  Then at least we will have some reference for what these things are supposed to sound like and what reed they use.  I suspect it is a LVDR 002 or LVDR 025 but we will see.

The LV002 is the correct reed.  Or at least that is what some people think.  If someone insists on buying a hog call I let them sound off on all of the different reeds I have.  Most chose the LV002.  Later most report back that I was right, hog calls do not work.  I still made a sale and I got a customer for life.

Well thanks guys. I dont care to see a hog on place and will shoot one on site if I do. But for my nephew, it would be a good gift for christmas and he asked for one so I will give it a whirl I guess. Thanks for the info dogcatcher.

I think you could get just as much good effect out of making him a deer grunter, and telling him he can use it on deer AND hogs, and see which one he kills the most of by its assistance.   :up1:  Just a thought.....

Or is it that there was only one shooter that day?

I'm interested to know this #1 lie Marvin.   Seriously.
