safe finish question
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:37:32 PM »
So far the only finish I have used is BLO.  I don't get a gloss finish like I want but are other finishes safe to use.  I would like to use a polyurethane finish but it is not safe.  Can someone tell me what finish I can use to get a high gloss that is safe.  Thanks again guys!

This is from the woodturning forums, all finishes are food safe once they have cured.  Cured is not dry to touch but after the the smell is gone.  Usually a few weeks.  Polyurethane is okay to use, I have used it for years and to my knowledge nobody has died, although there are a couple of customers that I would not miss if they did die.

Spar urethane has all the good looks of polyurethane plus major durability.  I'd never use polyurethane on a call that is intended to get wet and bumped around in the field when spar is available.  Another good finish is WaterLox, which is polymerized tung oil.

As far as safety, you're getting more nasty stuff in your mouth from BLO than you will from spar, laquer, poly or most other finishes.

I got some salad bowl finish from woodcrafters a couple weeks ago and dipped a few calls in it and wow it looks great. Now have to see how durable the finish is. I also put it on a dymondwood call while it was turning on the lathe and it looks good so far.
