padauk call
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:11:06 AM »
Here's a padauk duck call I made tonight.  I got a nice piece of 8/4 padauk at the lumberyard last week and it has one edge with some sapwood on it.  I thought that was a cool feature, and I like the black line between the heartwood and the sapwood.  The band is aluminum...Would've looked cool with copper.  The call was sanded to 800 and buffed on the Beall buffer, then friction polished with Mylands.  I'm still getting the hang of making inserts and tuning my own calls, and this one sounds great.

Anyone have any finishes for padauk that they recommend?  I tried spar varnish on it once on a TV tray I built....Once!  It didn't dry and ruined the project.

that sapwood is a good find, great for character.  i've always used penetrating oils and friction polish on my paduak, but i'm gonna try ca glue on my next one.  i think it'll fill those pits in the grain nicely.

Nice job there KC......I have a Padauk trumpet on the finishing rack waiting on a mouth piece....I used waterlox on it and it looks really good.....the problem is that the open grain takes more coats than other woods to fill em up....I let the first coat cure and then when I applied the second coat I sanded it in with 600 grit....The slurry helped to fill the holes....I left it kind of lumpy instead of wiping the slurry off.....After it cured I sanded it down smooth and added 3 more coats....Still could use some coats but it looks very nice.

I know you got some waterlox

On oil woods I've been sanding with 1000 grit, turning my lathe wide open and hitting it with very fine steel wool.  Then I take regular carnuba wax and apply a coat, leave it spinning, buff it off.  And repeat 3 or 4 times.

Oh yeah, really like the call too.

I really like the sapwood in the call.    The call has great eye appeal!

I don't think that I've done a padauk call, and I don't know of any recommended finished for it.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

That's pretty much what I do, except I usually stop sanding around 800 and let the Beall buffer do the rest of the work.  The third step with the Beall is pure carnuba wax, and I do at least three coats.  On the Beall system the whole process takes maybe 4 minutes.  Best thing since sliced bread!!!

The first call got lonely so I made it a twin brother.  Little different barrel shape (by accident), but I made a copper band for it and I like the way the band turned out.  Made it from a 1" copper fitting and a little work with the file, then sanding.

My wife prefers the aluminum.  I think I like the copper on this call better.
