Now I feel like a call maker
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:51:22 AM »
I started with barrels and Echo inserts.  Exciting, but I didn't feel like it was all mine....Felt odd bragging about them and taking any credit at all for the way they sound.

I finally got a toneboard jig.  Got it from river mallard.  :up1:  I've made about a dozen or so toneboards on it, altering this and that.  How much to file off compared to the jig's profile, how deep to drill the hole, cork depths, reed lengths.  After some modifications I've got them where I want them.  I still have a lot to learn but I'm really happy with the sound I'm getting thus far.

The one in the picture is my third honestly successful toneboard/call.  It is made frome plain old black walnut and finished with BLO.  I sanded between applications of BLO to fill the grain.  It feed chuckles and quacks well, and sounds great at the top end when you really get on it too...Nice ringing highball.  I made it a little larger/longer than most of my calls normally are.

I need to get a microphone thingy for my computer so I can post sound files.

Glad your getting the hang of that jig... Its not a world champion insert maker, but it produces a heck of a good insert with very little messing around with it. Keep playing with it and you will get it even better.....Doug

I have only made two calls so far and i feel that the way you are going is the way to go. I am going to make a few more calls and then start making every thing from scratch. Very nice work.  Carl
