what type of wood to use
« on: August 31, 2009, 03:29:27 PM »
What type of wood is best to use for making duck call barrels.  I purchased 5 echo inserts today and have not placed an order for wood yet.

I'm with Mr Parker on this, denser woods wil hold up better to the vibrations and the wear and tear duck calls face.

Agreed, dense woods are best.  Cocobolo is a favorite, bocote, bloodwood, african blackwood.  You can use domestic hardwoods like walnut and maple too.

PH,  nothing wrong with the Echo inserts.  As far as your wood selection go's... pick something pretty and durable.  The wood selection is not critical with using the Echo inserts as they will sound just about the same in any wood.  Depending on the colors of your inserts, you can pick the wood to sort of match them....

One of my favorite looks is the clear Echo insert with a nice Kingwood barrel

Do you have access to any local wood. Sooner or later you're going to want a bunch of wood on hand.

I like maple, not for looks but for the sound and the cost of the wood.  It is hard to beat the cost of maple so it makes it great to try out the unknowns.
