what drill bit is best for acrylic?
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:56:49 PM »
Got my hands on some cast acrylic to make a couple duck calls.  Never tried it before.

With wood calls I use a brad point bit on my drill press to drill the blanks.  Will that bit work ok on acrylic or should I get a jobber bit?  I did read Al's tutorial that recommended automatic transmission fluid as a cutting lube, so I'll be doing that for sure.

Thanks!
Aaron

I use standard jobber bits but there are some acrylic bits out there that are supposed to be just fantastic for drilling acrylic.

The cutting agent can be a lot of things.   ATF works, so does good old ice water.

Have fun

I like the bit from Abbeon for drilling Acrylic.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

If you have access to a metal lathe, you can drill undersize then open it up with a boring bar. Depending on the insert you have on the boring bar, you can get a very smooth, straight bore.
Just thought Id throw that out there. I suck at acrylic, so, you may not want to listen to me : )
