Payback is a ...........pleasure.
« on: May 13, 2008, 07:52:31 PM »
It took a while, but I finally got the call made from a special piece of Koa I brought back from Maui. Not super impressed with the tone board shape but it's the third one I made for this barrel and I like the sound so I went with it. It's Koa and rock maple. I had to make it a two piece type due to the Koa not being very dense and wanting to tear out. As for the sound, it's a screamer, just like I wanted.  As is always the case, my pictures don't really reflect the figure and depth of the wood. This one is going to the guy that helped me get a working tone board out of my own shop, and even sent a prize winning call of his own to me to use as a go-by. Shawn, I'm keeping the call you sent me ;D, but I hope this might make up for it. I'd be interested in your feedback on my version of the tone board and sound when you get it.
Thanks again for the help !
Moving forward one step at a time.....

OK, had a few delays and logistical issues to work through, but the call is in the mail!
When you get it, don't be surprised by the sound, I like a raspy call, but I have a time trying to get em loud and raspy. This one will do both, but it takes a bit of practice. None of the others have near as much rasp, and are much easier to blow, but then this call ain't for no beginner is it !
Thanks again for the help ! You pulled me right out of the toneboard ditch.

Well I got the call yesterday, and all I can say is WOW!!! That is one fine duck call sir. The picture posted does not do it justice, the grain is almost 3-D looking and the craftsmanship is second to none. Thanks again Richard for the call. Shawn

You are more then welcome.
Glad you like it, that is a fine piece of wood ain't it.
Does it sound like a duck to you ?
I almost did some more tunning on it to get rid of that weird rasp, but I liked it once I figured out how to work it.
The other boards comming off the jig all sound great (to me anyway) and are easier to work.
Do you think the rasp ( or what ever a real call maker would cal lit) is a possitive or a negative ?

Richard,
It did not take me long to figure out how to run it. I run it with more voice than usual and it sounds great. You already told me you like a higher pitch so I expected that. I do not have the call in front of me but if I remember right it looked like you put a little more slope in the radius. That will get the reed further off of the board. The "rasp" you may be hearing could be a little bit of shatter. I did not get on it real hard last nite (my wife frowns on that ;D) and forgot to bring it with me this a.m. I will play around with it some more later today and send you a p.m. Shawn
