Old School Deer Grunt ?
« on: May 06, 2008, 04:43:07 PM »
I have been asked to build a deer grunt from Hickory off of a new ranch owners land.
Is there an old school method / material for the bent tube part of a modern call.
I have built a few grunt calls and have always wished there was something more permanent that could be used in place of the plastic.
What would you use if you wanted the call to last for a very long time ?

If this is a ridiculous question, just say so. I’m clueless when it come to these things….
Thanks in advance for the help.

I make them without the plastic tube.  They are about 10" to 11" long, I like the call better this way, it has a deeper grunt sound.  Not sure when the plastic tube came out time wise but before it made it's debut all of them were made without the tube.  Herters, Gander Mountain and others had them that looked like long duck calls.  They have the sound similar to the plastic tube version.  The longer the exhaust the deeper the sound. I very rarely now use the plastic tube, never liked it and only do it on special order.

I like the looks of that without a tube.  That's a nice looking call.

Here are some of the last ones that I made.  The mouth piece is about 3.5" and the exhaust is he mouth piece is drilled 3/4" about 4.5".   The exhaust is step drilled 1/2" for 1.5" and the rest is drilled 3/4".    A tenon and O rings on the exhaust end keep the parts together,

Rich, I like the looks of that horn grunt. I bet that can get some deep grunts. Is that an original idea? I like it.

Well......you've already got some great ideas to work with here!

I'll just throw in, like Marvin said, to make the tube end plenty long out of something.  A short tube makes a crappy grunt.

WOW, thanks for the feedback. I cut some 4" blanks to dry out of the log he gave me, I better go cut a few more a bit longer now.
Those are really good looking calls guys, I just love classic design and old school looks.

I seen your calls on another site and I thought they were pretty neat then and I still like them

Rich
I never thought of putting a cow horn on the end of one but that is a nice looking grunt you got there also.

WOW, these are ALL very nice indeed. With your permission of course, I would like to make a few "old school grunts" like that with out the plastic tube. That is of course IF I can make it work out right.  ;)
