Need some help making my first squirle call.
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:46:51 PM »
Hey guys I would like some help on making my first squirrel call. I use a hut game call mandrel and have 1/2" and 5/8" bushings. Would I be able to use this or do I need some other type supplies. I have made some deer grunts so I have no idea where to even begin. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jeremy

I would think u would have to make some bushings for the mandrel because squirrel calls use a jc reed but i'm not expert. Good luck.

I'm not quite sure myself, but I have this idea in my head.I'm gonna turn a tennon, then chuck it up in my collet chuck, once I get done turning it I'm gonna drill it on my lathe9Kinda like the way I do my rabbit distress calls).I've been want ing to try a few of these myself.

Are you going to be using the reed assembly from hut with the rubber sleeve? If so all you need to do is drill a 1/2" hole through the blank and turn the barrel then install the 1/2" sleeve and reed into  the barrel.

I hope HUT gave you a reed that will tone out low enough for a squirrel call.  I told them the last lot they bought for squirrel calls were the wrong reed, and they told me they would refund my money if I sent the parts back, but really had no interest in fixing the problem.  They said, "JC told us these are the right reeds for these squirrel calls."  I told them they were not, and would not sound like a squirrel no matter how hard someone tried.

I also use the rubber bushings so I can drill my holes at 1/2".  If you need any further help, feel free to send me a PM.
