curly hickory
« on: June 22, 2009, 11:15:16 PM »
Here's one I did a couple months ago out of a piece of 4/4 curly hickory that I found deep in the pile at my hardwood dealer.  It was in tough shape and I had to plane it down quite a bit to get it cleaned up.  I laminated it to a piece of cherry to form the top ring of the call.  The striker had to be laminated too (unfortunately), and I used a cherry peg and a cherry cap.  This one was slate over glass, and had a great sound to it.  The finish is sanding sealer with deft...The sanding sealer popped the curl out nicely.
The owner of this call is in West Virginia coal country and has ordered two calls from me this year, and sicked his family and co-workers at the mine on me as well...Sent a lot of calls to those folks!
Critiques/comments welcome!!!!
