A few of my calls
« on: June 07, 2009, 03:51:46 PM »
I've been posting here for a while but haven't posted too many pics of my calls.  I've got lots of good advice from lots of folks here at THO.  Here are a few recent ones I've made.  Critiques are welcomed!!!
This one's from a nice piece of maple burl.  Lots of little inclusions in this one that took filling with CA glue.  I finished it with a couple coats of spar.

This one's zebrawood laminated with wenge.  This one is an aluminum call and ended up sounding great.  The finish is also spar.

This one's bocote.  Note that the striker is turned on the end grain instead of lengthwise.  The end grain was really cool so I did it this way to show the end grain off.

Here's a cocobolo call, also with an end grain striker.  Note that the grain features in the call line up with the striker.

This one is from a piece of redwood burl.  I made it for Keith Mark, owner and host of Macmillan River Adventures TV show on the Outdoor Channel.  He's in my area so I contacted him and ended up giving him two calls.  He and some others went out that weekend and they took three birds with them.  They filmed the hunts and they should air on TV this summer.

Here's the other one I made for Keith.  It is cocobolo.  His cameraman was more than happy to get this one and send me some nice pics of it laying with a big tom last week.

This one is spalted maple and purpleheart.  The finish is three coats of waterlox.  I like working with spalted maple but no matter how hard I try I can't ever get the inside of the sound holes to look all that good.

Great group of calls there. I will say it again. I like the fact that you use clean simple lines in your calls in order to show the material you are using. That is what I try to do as well.
