First try a celtic knot
« on: May 24, 2009, 05:48:20 PM »
Well after giving it some thought and worrying I was going to totally mess it up thought I try to do a knot this is my 3rd Cow elk call Maple with Celtic knot out of Purpleheart and purpleheart on bottom like the two colors together they really pop..Thanks to those that incuraged me to just try it, Like I was told relax it's only wood!!
To those who haven't tried on yet give it a shot it is pretty cool watching the knot come to life. I still have to finish few more coats clear
My knot is off a little but for my first one I'm happy with it I think I know what happened so I learned something so look it over and if you have any ideas on where I made my mistake please let me know.....Thank you to all that share there knowledge so freely with us who are just trying to figure out this world of turning..

I have to get a couple calls made up for fathers day coming up I will do the knot as soon as I get them done. That thing was all I could think about while I was working on it. The wait for the glue to dry was killing me! As for colors I dont have a big selection of wood so Im not much help.

bloodwood knot with an ebony barrel ?That would be nice combo I bet I like the combos the guys use that make the knot really pop out I have some blood wood I picked up small piece the other day so I guess will see if they might have some ebony as well.
JCZ I know what you saying that is why I was putting off trying the knot it was all the time waiting for the glue to dry and make my next cut..Now I have wood combos going through my head for another knot..
Has any body used thin pieces of plastic laminate for knots? Does the material for the knot have to be the same thickness as your saw kerf? just as long as it is same width as the block of wood you are using? Just thinking out loud..

I have seen people use pick guard for guitars as well as cut up coke cans to line the wood between the primary call wood and the knot wood. Something to check into, adds a nice 3rd color to your knots.

Thanks John NY
Spitfire I don't think any thing is written in stone I'm going to try few things out if they don't work out oh well!I was thinking on using the little sample pieces of counter top laminate you can get from home centers but the would only show up as black in the call I like your idea I want to add color to the calls any one use any of the wood dyes out there do they penetrate the wood enough to dye then glue up and turn?

The pick guard is nice because you can get multiple color choices from that. Obviously the coke can is gonna add a nice metal look to the call. I have used transtint(I think that is the name) dyes before but only applied it to my piece once I finish turned it so I couldn't answer how deep the color goes as I always apply once I am done turning.

The pick guard is that piece that sets along the sound chamber hole right? Do they sell those at guitars stores or would I look else where for them? I don't think the stain would go deep enough into the wood to work like I'm thinking..
Your idea on the pick guard is the way to go for colors thanks..

No pickguard is used in making calls as far as I know, in regards to it being in the sound chamber hole, I think you are talking about Mylar?

Here are a few links to pickguard material

Grizzly seems to be the cheapest

Obviously you can try a local music store as well...Hope this helps

yeah most sheets are 10x10 or something like that so it should last for some time.
