Length of barrels? for cow Elk calls
« on: April 21, 2009, 08:04:39 PM »
great calls I was wondering does the length of the barrel change the sound of the elk call I made my first one the other day but looks kind of short compared to the ones I've been seeing..it sound right but thought I would make longer on just to see if I can tell the difference  Keep up the great calls
I learn something each time I come here

Mmmm.....A pro-fesh-enal elk call maker may scoff at my response, but I don't think the barrel length matters a ton.  There IS a different sound that comes out of a different length of barrel, but that's just another different girl for the boys to come looking for, right?

I think fitting the reed assembly into the barrel correctly is #1.  The reed assembly is not straight, it is a #2 MT, so I use a #2 MT taper to make this a tight fit.

My barrels are 2 1/2" long in general, and have called in both cows and bulls in CO and WY.

I like to make mine long enough to hold comfortably with gloves. Somewhere between 2 or 3 inches.

Parker where did you purchase your #2 MT taper?

Harvey,

I looked all the places I order from, and Enco has the cheapest price on one right now..... $51.11.

So, I'm guessing that's where I bought it from.

I also cheat by using a 43/64" bit.

Going from 5/8" hole to reaming it out to fit the 2MT is A BEAR.

I'm with Parker on this one, the length really doesn't matter.....

I think about how much the thing weighs on a lanyard around my neck.  Those mountains aren't getting any easier to climb....every ounce counts... :surrender:
