Mandrel size
« on: December 08, 2019, 01:03:01 AM »
I have a Sears craftsman 12 inch wood lathe (113.228160) and I’m trying to see if anyone in here is running the same machine and to see what mandrels or other tools y’all are using for duck calls and other game calls. I’ve bought two others that said measurements would fit mine but I have yet found one.

Most of us use the Penn State Industries (PSI) collet chuck and a straight mandrel. You adapt the collet chuck to the spindle nose of your lathe and then the collets allow different size straight mandrels to be used.

PSI should have an adapter for your lathe.

Now you just need to figure out the lathe spindle  thread. The PSI collet chuck has a 1x8 internal thread and comes with one adapter for a 3/4x16 spindle.
Buy a 3/4x16 nut and try it on your spindle, it should work according to my reference material. If so all you need is to order the PSI chuck with the adapter. Amazon sometimes has a better price on the chuck.

Here is a link to the operators manual for your lathe.
