Attempt #2
« on: April 02, 2019, 09:08:36 PM »
Well thanks to this forum and it's members I think I have my first successful call! I ran into a few issues but I think it's going to work out. Last couple pics are what it looked like when wiped down with mineral spirits, it's sitting in a teak oil batch as we speak. Can't wait to get it assembled!

Looks good!  Im curious how it will sound.  I've never seen a pedestal that wasn't hollowed out before...I wonder what tonal impact it will have.

I followed the tutorial at the below link, I assume it works without the pedestal being hollowed out.

This is what it looked like prior to assembly. Some sanding marks showed up on the bottom as the finish progressed but overall I'm happy with it.

The wood turning and finish look great! Now to glue in the sound board and striker surface!
How does it sound?

Thanks guys. I took a short video last night about an hour after gluing it up. I still need to figure out a best striker and work the surface a little but I think it's making turkey-ish sound. Hopefully I can improve from here. Don't beat me up too much!

Going to sound different in 24 hrs
Sounds like it's good for the first one and interesting design
It's hard to judge being your first and the glue isn't cured yet
You do have a idea how it's going to sound

To my ears just a little hollow sounding........

I thought it sounded a bit hollow as well, will try to get some outdoor recording with it soon.

Also, that ugly black striker seems to be one of the best options I have for it so far.

Got a chance to try it out in the woods. I paced off 20 yards and tried out 4 different strikers. The 2nd one wasn't very good but I thought the other 3 sounded ok. Strikers are listed below. Tell me what you think.

Striker #1: Aaron Wingert 1 piece dymondwood
Striker #2: unknown maker 2 piece dymondwood/acrylic
Striker #3: Aaron Wingert 2 piece purple heart
Striker #4: Primos black plastic

Strikers make a big difference!  Not bad for a first call.
