Best Combination Surface/Sound Board for..................

(1/1)

SG Watkins:
Hey Everyone,
Its been awhile since I have been on the site.  I moved this past summer and I am just now getting life back to normal.  I would like to know everyone's opinion for some combinations for various woods.  My favorite woods to turn are:
Walnut
Osage
Wenge
Purple Heart
Cherry
Zebrawood
Dogwood

Comments are appreciated!

FDR:
On a 3.5 inch pot it is hard to beat Aluminum over glass. Walnut, Cherry or Maple.

On a 3 inch pot I sure like copper over double strength glass. KOA wood really sounds good. Osage should also work.

Disclaimer: I have never won a contest or even entered a contest. Turkeys are my only judges!

Tip: if you don't like the sound change the striker first!

Couldn’t agree more with Fred. The striker can make or break the  call.

Here’s a few combinations I’ve found to work well. I threw in a few wood species not listed.
Cherry slate over aluminum
Walnut slate over glass (slate over aluminum for a little more rasp)
Zebrawood aluminum over glass
Padauk crystal over slate
Yellowheart slate over glass
Mahogany glass over glass
Birdseye maple crystal over slate (yes I specified Birdseye because from my experience Birdseye maple makes a way better sounding call than any other maple... I have no clue why)

Cherry seems to make a good call in almost any combination

The darker Cherry heartwood seems to make a better pot and striker
