Reed flexibility, tone channel length

I’m learning that when tuning duck call, with my jig I need to increase the radius at tip of tone board to improve sound and reduce lock up. I’m at 1/2” from tip.
 I’m wondering if I should lengthen the tone channel instead of sanding the radius (did lengthen it a bit with no apparent change,) still needed to sand radius.
Or if the reed was not as flexible it seems it would resist being forced down and locking up. Is all Mylar of equal thickness the same in flex?
 Was thinking of trying to add a second reed (double reed) to see if this would change the need to sand the radius so much.

Wuebber, where did you get the Mylar, what color is it? There are some different varieties out there.
There's a duck call in that block of wood. I just have to find it!

The Mylar is opaque white, purchased from pintail.
Built another insert yesterday with same issue of locking on low end, can correct with sanding of radius. Today I’ll build another but increase length of tone channel.

I imagine you are using a public jig, if so they aren't made for you to get a finished call from them. They are a learning tool , they just give you a starting point , and you learn how a duck call works and what does what to the toneboard by trial and error. Keep good notes as to what happens when you file here or there, and you'll figure it out.
     As far as the mylar is concerned most of it is pretty similar, you have to get that toneboard figured out before you could really tell much difference in different brands of mylar.

Yes, using a public jig and am definitely using trial and error.
 Thx for the answer regarding Mylar. So far, It seems that either increasing the length of the tone channel or increasing the radius eliminates the lock up on the low side.
Next, as per Pintail’s jig tutorial. I need to try increasing the exhaust from 3/8 to 1/2 diameter.

Update, after many duck inserts I have produced one that sounds dang good. Hopefully it’s not a happy accident. Now, to continue  to refine, and get repeatability.
 Years ago I stood in Alvin Taylor’s call shop in Arkansas, bought a few calls from him and talked for a few hours about many things, but little about call building...sure wish I could spend another afternoon with him in his shop.
 Funny thing is, he was learning to work with Corian, and commented how he would do the next corian call different. Even an experienced call maker like him was still learning.
 I bought that call and it is the best sounding call I own.

You asked about where to get mylar for reeds.  Joann Fabrics carries sheets of mylar, different thickness' if you want to try and make your own reeds.  Here is the link - https://www.joann.com/no-melt-mylar-plastic-template-sheets/4793402.html  Not a bad price so you can cut and make a ton of reeds to your liking if you want.  Just some info.

Did you know that Mr. Taylor passed away a few years ago .


Any call of his is highly sought after and bring in some big dollars.
