Best way to make the flare tups with a rounded end??
« on: August 30, 2017, 10:53:50 PM »
Hello, I prefer strikers that flare at the tip and are round, I leave the end coming to a flare on the lathe but what is the best way to then make the very tip perfectly round? Looking for any advice or tips! Only way I'm thinking is a belt sander or I've heard of using a cue tip shaper..

The best way to make it perfectly even will be on the lathe for sure.  Now, the idea of ROUND, you will have to work on some kind of tool that fits you best. I can tell you, my go-to rounding tool for call mouths and all is a Sorby 1/4" round nose scraper. 863H is the model. I am surprised more call makers do not have this little guy in their arsenal. I use it on every barrel and every striker that comes off my lathe. And many more parts than that.

I do it on the lathe. I prefer to use the Versa chisel from Benjamins best in a 3/4. Its cheap and easy.
