OK guys. I feel like I accomplished something great today. I joined this forum and started turning around a year ago but only got to turn for about two months. I came back to the lathe about a month ago and set out to finally make an insert that sounded like a duck. I had made a few inserts last year but they sounded in no way like a duck (not Like anything really. Haha) I've read so much on here about the hundreds of ways to go about making an insert (or just buying premade inserts) and was torn between buying a jig or keep doing it freehand. Being stubborn (at least that's what my wife calls me), I can't give up what I've started. So I spent the past three hours working on an insert cutting it with a coping saw and filing it down and I have to say I surprised the mess out of myself. It sounds like a duck!
it's true when these guys say that it is definitely worth the trial and error when you finally find that one that sounds great. Being that it is midnight where I'm at right now, I couldn't share my excitement with anybody else but this forum. So there you go guys and here is a picture of the call (with no finish and made from a scrap piece of pine 2x4). Thanks for all the help and information y'all have provided for me! I can't wait to go make another!
