Need little advice on my pot call
« on: July 07, 2017, 11:22:03 AM »
My pots(walnut glass over glass)play just like I want out close to the edge but moving closer towards middle of call it gets really flat sounding...  would narrowing my o/d of my pedestal make my sweet spot larger?  Thanks for any advice

Have you tried your measurements with slate as your striking surface to be sure the glass striking surface is not the tough part of the equation?

I am not tracking quite what you are asking for a measurement change.  Making the pedistal o/d smaller?  If so, that will make your chamber bigger, therefore probably giving you a more hollow sound.  You will probably want to keep your pedistal at the same thickness but not the same size i/d and o/d.

Yes was talking bout narrowing od of pedestal.... i did and got more of a hollow sound, got 2 more turned and waiting on glue to dry to try out... do most ppl leave pedestal wall solid or cut few holes to let sound out? Haven't tried that yet

The pedestal cut is very debatable. I think most folks don't, but there are plenty of people who do. Its just another experiment to try to find your prefect combo.

THE PEDESTAL APPARENTLY MAKES SOME DIFFERENCE
I GOT SOOOO FUSTRATED N MADE A BIG ONE IN MY CALL
AND THE RESULTS WAS I CAN PLAY THE CALL ANYWHERE ON THE SERVICE
AND DIDNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO WHERE I PLAYED , sounded the same , THE PEDESTAL
WAS NOT SOLID JUST A RING SHAPE ........

I started 1" and made all the way up  to 2"... persimmon slate call turned out great but walnut glass is either to high pitched or hollow sounding. You can tell as soon as you do 1st purr if it's going to be a good one or scrap pile

Things that affect a hollow sound. Depth of the pot. Thickness of the bottom of the call too thin you will lose the proper resinous sound. Diameter of the pedastal especially when combined with too thin of a bottom. Now put thin bottom, small pedastal, deep pot, and drop the sound board too deep and you got Junk. All of these play hand in hand.

I still say the most forgiving pot call wood to learn on is red cedar. Slate over glass, red cedar pot, purpleheart pegged striker. :)

Having the right jaws for turning strikers makes a difference also. I broke a bunch when I first started by having too much tension between centers. :stickman1:. Alot of ways to do it a good set of pen jaws are handy.
