Best method to turn a pot call
« on: June 15, 2017, 03:08:28 PM »
Alright guys and gals... I'm new to the site and have been turning calls for about 2 years. My calls sounds decent but I have found some frustration and inconsistencies with my method of turning. I'm currently using a Penn Stare Industries screw chuck. I know that there are a lot of great threads on here and a million ways to make a call but my question is what method do you guys like best for turning a pot I.e. Scre chuck, mandrel, glue chuck, etc. I know a lot of guys use 4 jaw chucks but how are you starting the call (especially for those without a center hole).

Thanks for any help,
Josh

I use a 4 jaw. Check out Aaron's tutorial on using a waste block :2up:

Thanks for the input! I just discovered the turkey call tutorial section. There is way more input than I was aware of. I definitely like the way Aaron makes calls with a waste block.

Crazy number of ways to make a pot call. :)

They are picky suckers though. Keep exact notes, and realize every little change is counteracting something else.

Good luck!

I drill a shallow 1/2" hole (maybe 1/4" deep) in what will be the front face of the blank, chuck it, round and true it, then cut a tenon in on the back side.  Flip it around, chuck it up, cut and finish everything on the inside/front, then flip it back around and chuck it on the pedestal.  Then you can cut of the tenon and shape the back and sides as you please.  Be careful not to get the pedestal too thin or over tighten the chuck.  Having that pot fly off the lathe is not fun

I appreciate the help. Evan, thanks for the detailed how to. I'll be careful not to over tighten or make the pedestal too thin. On that note... how thin about do you guys recommend having the pedestal when chucking it on a 4 jaw. Ive been using a screw chuck so that hasn't been an issue. My pedestals Are usually about 3/16" thick...
