First with Massey Finish
« on: April 18, 2017, 03:47:59 PM »
So, I finally knocked the Massey finish off my "to learn" list.  Gotta say... I was impressed with this finish.  I've got a few things to tweak on the next batch of finish.  Namely, I'll use less acetone to allow the epoxy to build up faster.  Took about 7 or 8 coats to get to the finish in the pic.

Blue buckeye burl with cocobolo insert.  Comments/critiques welcome.

Beautiful call!

For some reason I thought that Cocobolo was no good with a Massey finish. Something about the oily wood. Is this not correct?

Thanks, Mark.  Oily woods don't work well with spar for sure.  But, they work well with Massey and CA finishes.

I've been working a lot with Cocobolo (just love that wood) and probably will until I become allergic to it! Anyway, will have to try the Massey finish on my next batch. Have been doing Watco teak oil and buffing with wax up to now.

If you apply a coat of sanding sealer (shellac) to cocobolo, first, you can then apply any finish you want.
