Getting my first cnc
« on: April 18, 2017, 11:08:16 PM »
Well I'm jumping in with both feet Saturday.  Will be picking up my stinger 1 cnc from camaster.  Can't wait to see what it can do.

Looking forward to seein what you produce!  How many axis does your new one have?  What is your main plan for it?

The machine is just 3 axis.  I can upgrade to 4th axis in the future.  I am looking to use it to machine the inside of my pot calls as well as the sound holes.  I will be able to set the machine to mill out 7 to 14 pot calls at a time depending on board size.  Once they are done I will still mount on my lathe turn the outside edge.  I will also be using the machine to make turkey tail plaques and other similar items.  My dad also owns a funeral home and he is wanting me to make urn boxes and with the machine I will be able to vcarve names on the boxes.  Lots of ideas in my mind both call related and other items.

Sounds like you need to post a video of it in action!

Sounds great John. I am looking forward to seeing what all you come up with.

I picked up the machine today.  Been wanting one of these machines for years.  Now the learning curve.

Flatness is the key. Both the machine bed and the board. The gantry doesn't know how flat the board is, so if the board isn't completely flat, your milling depths will be the same, but the end result on the board will be different. That's the biggest thing I have learned on mine. The Shark has a cool feature, called a virtual zero. It makes a virtual flat plane on top of the board surface by measuring the height of the board on all 4 corners. I don't know if other CNC routers have that feature. It comes in more handy for your VCarved work than with pot calls.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

You will love the CNC.  The Shark I use is a fun, fun tool.  Flat machine bed is important.  The virtual zero that Shark has is nice, I don't know if that is available or not.  We had to replace the bed on our machine and it was a bear to get it flat.

I just started tinkering with calls and have cut several prototype pot calls.  I draw my simply profile in AutoCAD and import into VCarve.  Easy to do in VCarve but I can do it crazy quick in AutoCAD.  The setup of the toolpaths is quick too, probably 5 minutes if you have your pot profile drawn out on paper with the depths specified.  I have my feed rate set pretty slow with only a moderate bit step over and I can cut a pot in less than 20 minutes.  I nail the corners of the 4 x 4 blank to a sacrificial bed and then use two tabs on the outer toolpath to hold it in.  Then, just cut out with the bandsaw.

The other opportunities for the CNC are endless.  Have fun!

I have the same machine.  Your going to really enjoy using the stinger.  The learning curve isn't to bad, but I learn something new every time I use it.  You can learn a lot from the tutorials on the V Carve Website.  Don't be afraid to call Camaster with questions, they are ready to help if you have a problem.
