Please Help Stuck Faceplate
« on: April 09, 2017, 11:05:25 PM »
I just purchased a Jet 1014 mini lathe. I got a great deal on it but the face plate is stuck. The face plate is round with no flat areas for a wrench. I have already bent a punch trying to get it unstuck. What can I do??? Thanks for your help!

Have you hosed the connection down with some kind of break-free yet?

I use some of that drawer liner material to grab my metal parts better when they are ticking me off.  If things still fail, I reach for the WD-40 and let it soak.

After a soak and it still won't come off, I would send it into a deep freezer or a walk in freezer for a couple hours and then give it a rip.

A couple good swift hits with a hammer to the faceplate could do some good somewhere in the process too.

The area of contact is where the faceplate and spindle touch. Oil that joint with a good thin oil.  The face plate has 4 holes. Take a 1x2 board 24 inches long and drill a hole to match one of the holes in the face plate. insert a bolt through the board and the face plate and place a nut on the spindle side. Mark the second hole in the faceplate and repeat above. You should now have a 24 inch lever attached to the faceplate with 2 bolts. Lock the spindle and apply some force to the lever. It should break loose. If not, tap the lever with a mallet. If it still will not come loose use a heat gun to warm the joint.

Our two favorite penetrating oils in the 'old car biz' are

PB Blaster

Rat Piss (mix of acetone and atf)

Extreme cold weather has been a game changer for breaking some frozen threads in my personal experience. To simulate, buy a can of keyboard/electronic duster, turn it upside down, and get a freeze spray instead of duster.

That's a good tip Scott. I will keep that trick in mind.

PB Blaster is what I was trying to think of this morning.

You could try a strap wrench.

Auto parts stores sell a product made to do exactly what Scott suggested which is even more effective. I think CRC might be the manufacturer.

Sorry for the delay. I am going to try some of these methods. The one issue I have is that I'm not sure how to lock the spindle. It is round with no square edges. The lathe is a JET 1014 mini lathe.
