Box call finish?
« on: April 01, 2017, 04:03:41 PM »
Hi everyone,

Lately I've been working on making solid box calls and I was wondering what everyone uses for a durable finish? I've done a little research  on here and it seems Deft is very popular, but it's tough to find where I am in Canada. What are some other options that will not alter the sound?

Do some of you put no finish on your box calls?

Thanks,

I take it based on the lack of response that this must be a guarded secret? lol

Several of the box calls in my small collection are finished with Tru Oil gunstock finish. I also use it to finish my pot calls both inside (thinned) and outside. Nice waterproof finish and easy to apply. I apply the Tru Oil with a gun cleaning patch. Dip the patch in the finish, squeeze out the excess and apply to the wood in the direction of the wood grain. If you thin the first and final coats you get better penetration and the final coat seems to smooth out better.
