Cleaning up Teak Oil on brass bands
« on: April 01, 2017, 01:47:36 PM »
OK, thought I'd ask before trying something myself, but here is the situation: I have a few calls I'm working on that I soaked in Watco Teak Oil. I've done several coats and am now moving on to finish the calls, but have oil built up on the bands that looks like crap. Would you use some sort of solvent (if so, what) to remove the oil from the bands or do you think it would buff off? I'm reluctant to try a solvent as I don't want to get any on the calls and ruin the finish. I don't know if buffing will do the trick or not. Thought I'd ask here and see what you guys do in this sort of situation.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom and experience shared!

Mark

If you are going to apply another finish just carefully wipe it off with solvent. You can also buff it off but you will have to carefully mask of the remander of the call or you will contaminate the call barrel with buffing residue. Them it will really look bad!

I was just going to buff with wax so I don't think it would contaminate the wood. Just don't know if it'll come off that way or not. Guess I'll give that a shot since I'm not going to hurt the finish that way for sure.

The brass will turn your wheel black and the black will transfer to the pores in the wood. I would just mask the call barrel with tape and wipe the band with solvent until the Teak oil is gone. Then mask the band with tape and buff the barrel with wax.

I new to this, would it be bad to dip in teak oil before putting the band on?

it is a common practice to install the band after the finish is applied. Just be careful when cleaning  up the extra glue.
