Lip depth

Should I be recessing my playing surface into the call?  Right now I have it basically flush with the top of my call is it better to have the surface inset a little, or is it really just personal preference?

I would say personal preference, but keep in mind that some callers believe the surface needs a 10 minute sanding job before every use.  I'm exaggerating a bit, but I've seen guys do this and sand the striker almost every time they use the call.  If you insert it too much they will sand away the finish on the rim of the call.

I am with Mr. Hoover on this. Its more about that end user than anything else in my experience.

Sanding is some kind of ritual to some folks. And I guess they never get, or care, that is the gobbler can hear your lightest purr, they can sure hear the unnatural sound of your sanding.
Pass on the tradition. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.
