My first calls
« on: February 26, 2017, 02:40:47 PM »
OK, have finally finished putting on the finish of my first three calls - two duck and one deer grunt (from left to right). Once the hunting season was over I decided to make some calls for myself and a couple of buddies. One of them doesn't hunt duck, but rather deer which is why I've got the grunt. All I've got to work with is an old early 1960's era Shopsmith in the lathe mode and some cobbled together tools. Did spring for a collet chuck and mandrel, but the rest of it is right out of the '60's. Anyway, here are some pics of the fruit of my labor:

Right to left: Cocobolo duck call with no band (turned before I found this forum), Bocate call with band, Cocobolo Deer Grunt with band.

Yes, that's a game of Rummikub in the background! I wanted as much natural light for the pictures as possible and the old kitchen table was it.  Anyway, wanted to share my first calls, show the obvious progression between the first call and subsequent calls, and see what you all thought for a first attempt! It will be hard to part with the Bocate call as I really like its shape and proportion. The first Cocobolo duck call will be on my lanyard next year. The first, even if a bit ugly, is always special!

PS I tried to find the tutorial on how to post pictures, but couldn't find it so all I've got are the above links to my One Drive account.... Sorry!
PPS Figured out the photobucket thing.  :2up:

Nicely finished calls!

I started on a 70's Shopsmith and loved that thing! Nothing wrong with 60's tech if it is maintained.
There's a duck call in that block of wood. I just have to find it!

Dang nice first set of calls compared to what some of us started with. Keep the first one.
