Finally got my first call done!
« on: February 24, 2017, 10:29:58 AM »
Well here it is,  I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Sound is just okay little high pitched and can get screechy going to try lowering the pedestal some and see what that does on my next one.  Critique away.

If you use a heat gun you can heat the slate and soundboard and take them out and lower the pedestal on this one.  Very good looking first call.

Before you take it apart try some different strikers. Purpleheart seems to work well with most calls.

I actually am getting the best sound with a Hickory striker. Tired purpleheart, rosewood, and hickory. They all sound pretty good until I try and pump up the volume that's when it gets a little screechy. I might try the heat gun and see what I can come up with.

You may want to try a striker with a little more weight.

So should I just keep the outside design the same and tweak internal dimensions. Or keep playing with designs while tweaking my internal dimensions?

I personally like the outside design. I would focus on the sound of the call first. Get that right then change the outside if you want. Make one change at a time, see how that affects the sound and keep good notes.

One thing I do know is the thinner the bottom where the pedastal is will cause the call to be screechy. I noticed you took a little wood off of the bottom at the pedastal. Whether that's the cause of the sound issue or not I don't know. You may want to try one without the indentation around the pedastal. The reason I know this is a gentleman learning to make calls could not get a call to sound good. He sent me a call to look at. I checked every measurement and he was spot on and by all practical purposes it should have worked but didn't. But one thing I noticed was the bottom of the pot was thinner than I would have made it. He only had 3/4" boards to start with so the bottom ended up very thin. So to check my theory out I laminated a piece of wood over it then I turned it down to about 1/4+" and the problem was cured gone was the screechiness. I would not rule out the pedastal height either because all of this stuff affects the finished sound.
