Wax removal?
« on: February 21, 2017, 03:29:04 PM »
OK, so I recently turned my first call (Cocobolo) before I found this site and all of the wonderful info on finishes here. Had used wax on it on the lathe, but now would like to put a Watco Teak oil finish on it. Is there anything I can use to remove the old wax finish (aside from sanding)? I've already glued the insert in the base so I can't put it  back on the madrel for a good sanding which is my aversion to that.

Tried a search for wax removal, but that didn't come up with what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Mark

Sanding is the only think I can think of.  Maybe others have a better way.

I'm curious though, when you say you've already glued the insert in the base, what do you mean?

The call insert is made by Winglock calls and glues into the bottom portion of the call so the hole where I'd put it on the mandrel is blocked. Make sense?

Ok.  Got it.  Wasn't familiar with an insert that needed to be glued in.  Didn't mean to hi-jack your post.

Most solvents will take it right off. I've used acetone.
There's a duck call in that block of wood. I just have to find it!
