I saw several buffing systems available such as the Beale system, and while I liked them and the results I did not really like the cost. I figured I could make something similar for much less.
I've always buffed my calls on the mandrel while turning them. Buffing them with a rotating buff does give a different result. It is somehow deeper and maybe longer lasting. I also think that I can buff oil finishes better with this system.
The setup uses my collet chuck and cone center to hold it on the lathe.
For materials, I used:
6" Flannel buffing wheel set from Lowes (about $12)
12" Piece of 5/8" allthread
4 Nuts to match the allthread
4 5/8" washers.
Before assembling it, I drilled the end of the allthread with a 1/8" drill, then opened the hole up with a chamfering bit somewhat to help it fit the cone center better.
I then assembled it and went to buffing.
I like using the white flannel wheel with a solid carnauba bar and just the right speed (fairly slow) to bring out the shine in oil finishes.
