Chuck key???
« on: February 13, 2017, 02:41:55 PM »
Fellas....so I buy a basically new jet 1221vs the other day. To my surprise the lathe came with 4 jaw nova....which looked to be a G3. So I order the chuck key from nova, and it doesn't really fit correctly. I can open and close  the jaws by moving the teeth in the back, but the key will not open the jaws. Like I said at first glance it looks exactly like a G3, but there is no "g3" marking on it...only nova scroll chuck
Possibly an older model before the G3? Different key?

Thanks

Idk if this helps but my nova chuck has two holes (one in each side) for the chuck key and the key only works in one of them, I'm not being a smart ass but did you try both sides?

Also, if you have been opening the jaws by hand you might have to move them around to get the gear on the back lined up right so the key fits in... Hope any of this was helpful

Hey Rob thanks for the ideas, but it doesn't work.  Evidentially the chuck I have is obsolete. It was a original nova scroll. There is one company in New Zealand that makes a key for it, but it apx $80 just to get the key. So with that being said...if there is anyone who has an original nova scroll and would like another Chuck shoot me a message.....ill send it for free.

**disclaimer--there is no key that will work with this chuck...you must have the original key or buy one from the New Zealand company.

I would get one made at a machine shop.

I would say what you have is the original super nova chuck which I have one also and the key is no good on it also teeth broke off and no one to be found, one with 5 teeth and one with 7 teeth I believe so we both have a good sinker.Cheaper to buy a new chuck.
