Problems with my lathe
« on: February 08, 2017, 07:06:05 PM »
I am still very new to turning. I was in the shop today gonna turn a pot and noticed roughing the blank I had a lot of chatter . I use a face plate that has a wood screw that secures my blank .. It's a psi barns.. First thought it might me the screw was bent so I changed it with the same results. Then did away with the screw and just screwed to the face plate it's self.. With same results.. Then tried the face plate that came with the lathe and you know it same thing.. No slack from a worn bearing ... I can put the live center in the head stock and can pull the tail stock up and they match perfect turn it on and they run together like they should.. What is causing the off kilter and the chattering

Check the tool rest and the "Banjo". That is the cross piece that holds the tool rest.  Both should be real tight. There is a washer/nut on the bottom of the Banjo that works with the lever on the front to tighten/loosen the Banjo. Might need adjustment.
