Hurricane turning tools
« on: January 29, 2017, 11:08:58 PM »
I need to order a couple square nose scrapers for a project. It seems my options revolve around the Hurricane brand, and Sorby. Obviously Sorby is the best of the best, but I know I will be paying for the name too. The Sorby version is $50, the Hurricane is $20.

Anyone have Hurricane tools to comment on the quality of their steel, especially their ability to hold an edge?

I don't know about the Hurricane tool but I have the Sorby and am very happy with it. As you said no risk there.

I have a few bowl gouges from hurricane and im happy with them they seem to hold a edge well enough i have a habit of constantly sharpening my tool weather it needs it or not ive spoiled myself with sharp tools . I guess you just have to weigh the options on how much your actually goin to use it .i would definitely take the chance with there scrapers if it was a fingernail gouge or my 3/8 gouge that i use every day probably not. Hope that helps

Vince, do you have the square carbide?

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Thank you Ryan!  I appreciate your insight.

BigB, yes, I almost always use my square carbide for getting things to a finished point. I am taking on a new project that won't allow for its use though. :) I will report back after my experimenting.
