A couple from a newbie
« on: July 25, 2016, 11:24:31 PM »
Hello all.
I picked up my first lathe this summer with the intention of making some calls, having some fun and fooling some birds.
Needless to say, I am hooked. Thank you all for the knowledge that you have shared on this forum. I have read almost every post on here. Also, several of you have created calls that are in my collection.

Here are my number 7 and 8 calls. Any criticism or suggestions are welcome.

Olive wood and Wenge. CA finish
Mystery burl and cocobollo. teak oil finish.
Both have a delrin toneboard that sounds good enough to make me smile, at least.

Thanks again,
Scott

They look great Scott! Nice shape.

Do you have a lanyard groove on your endpiece or is that decorative only? Might be a little small if it is functional.

I lived in the St. Louis area many years ago and turned calls over in Belleville, IL. Hunted the Kaskaskia River a good bit then too. (Lived in Chesterfield when I was a kid too!)
There's a duck call in that block of wood. I just have to find it!

  Larue,
I used to live 6 miles from Belleville Il., When you turned calls in Belleville did you know Robert Mueller, and have you ever heard of Mississippi Valley Duck Hunters, that is a duck club that I belong to still to this day...  Robert started making calls in the early eighties.
I also hunt the Kaskaskia River from New Athens on down to the Mississippi river near Chester Il..  Just wondering, was shocked to see that you hunted the Kaskaskia river and hung around Belleville, Like your calls from what I've seen,  have a great day and take care...........Ken Hubbard

Thanks for the compliment Ken. Robert and that club both sound familiar. I also belonged to a retriever club there for a short while and worked my yellow lab on their club land.

I lived there in the late 90's. I ran Far Oaks Golf Club in Collinsville/Caseyville. Wife taught school at Signal Hill Elementary. Our golf pro at the club was a duck/goose hunter and he would hook me up with the execs from Ernst & Young, Budweiser and Ralston Purina that hunted. They all had boats and equipment, but none could call! When they heard I made calls and could call I'd get invites to tag along on their trips to the oxbows on the Kaskaskia.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Lagrue,
It's a small world. I drive through Chesterfield on a regular basis.
Those are supposed to be lanyard grooves. I was thinking the same thing, about making them bigger.
Thanks for the feedback!
