Carved Black Walnut...

I picked up some Black Walnut a while back.  Figured I would try it out first making a grunt call.  It turned well, but just was lacking something?  So I decided to do a quick carving on it. 

Here's the rough carving (below):



The start of Painting: (Below): [Notice the grain pattern]



The Finished call:





For the folks new to carving, notice how I used the open grain flow (pores) of this walnut to simulate the hair pattern on this carving.  On tighter grained material I would have had to of carved the detail.  Learn to let the wood work for you.
