Anyone use mesquite for call bodies?
« on: June 20, 2016, 03:35:25 PM »
I just found this site and joined today. I have surfed the forums a little bit and find the information fascinating and interesting. I have zero experience making calls but do turn a lot of pens and bowls when time allows.

I was wondering if anyone uses mesquite for call bodies .

I would assume that standards like cocobolo and rosewoods would be typical of some of the woods used.

I am just curious.

I have used black mesquite for the body of a Reelfoot style call.  It worked out fine just a little plain grained without figure.

I agree with Fred on the black mesquite . I think it is from South America. I have turned some mesquite from Texas and love it. Smells great and turns great too. I have used it on squirrel calls leaving sap edge natural for different look. Wish I could get more.

Welcome to the forums!

I've turned many calls out of mequite, and I think it is a pretty common wood for calls.   You can fine some nicely figured mequite if you look.

I have turned some in the past and enjoy it!  Makes a good turkey striker.

Thanks for the information.
I have used it mainly for turning bowls. Besides how nice it turns and sands I like it because if you turn it green it moves almost the same amount in both directions when drying so you don't get and oval out of round bowl.

I am fortunate to have gotten a lot of big mesquite from trees that were removed on campus.
