Bigfoot Sighting!!
« on: June 03, 2016, 11:14:47 AM »
So, I had a buddy ask me if I could make a big duck call... a really big duck call.  He wanted it for a conversation piece/mantel display.  He asked for an "old school" style call. (which is good, because I'm not sure where I'd get a band to fit it otherwise)

Here's what I came up with.  It's red cedar, single reed (yes, it does work).  Spar finish.  The second pic has a normal size curly maple call next to it for size comparison.  It stands just over 12" tall.  Works great on 80 pound mallards and as a Sasquatch mating call.

I took a bunch of "process" pics.  If anyone's interested, I could probably put together a tutorial or something to show how it was made.

I call it the "Bayou Bigfoot!"

That is some call!  I would like to see the pictures/write-up on how it was made.

Thanks, guys.

Fred, I'll see about putting something together that shows my process.  There were a lot of lessons learned in this call.  I doubt I'll make many more but I did make another to keep.  I'll put it on my table at call shows, etc.

Lon, the finish wasn't too bad.  I used spray on spar.  I typically dip in spar to get a shiny finish but I'd have needed a gallon of spar to dip this thing.  5 or 6 coats with some light sanding in between a couple of times is all it took.
