When finishing a striker do you only finish the body of the striker or the dowel too? It doesn't seem like you would get any sound if you finished the dowel/striking end.

I put a couple of layers of painters tape on the bottom 1" on the peg. Then finish out the rest of the striker.

I finish everything but the end. The tip is the only thing that touches anyway. I do burnish the end on a piece of glass to make it harder.

Everyone has different ideas on what is best. One thing is for sure, finish on the tip won't do you any good. I don't finish my strikers. With the working end not finished, how they have to be to work, and them being used in moist conditions quite often.....I don't want moisture to get trapped in the striker. I want it to be able to breathe and get rid of that moisture as the day gets warmer.

Just my take.

That, and folks lose strikers like MAD.  :)
