Years of gluing pot calls the wrong way
« on: February 29, 2016, 05:53:09 AM »
So, I do my craziest thinking when I am 3/4 asleep. When something hits me in this state, I have to get up and test the theory. So, here I am at 4am.

I have ALWAYS glued a striking surface in by running a bead along the little bitty lip of the call with the fat head of a GOOP tube. Or, using the GOOP tip, and making a mess.

It has never EVER occured to me until just now, if I run a bead on the bottom of the surface, rather than on the edge of the call, that I could get a really clean look on the outside because 100 percent of the glue is on the bottom of the surface, where it goes.

Well, this method is insanely easy and leaves a beautiful finished product.

Still not the answer for a glass surface, I am sure, but man does it work well for ceramic and slate.  Set one edge down in the ledge, rock it down, and slightly twist into place.

Maybe I was the only one that was making this hard. Seldom are we around each other to see the 'simple steps'.

I also cut an angle on the end of Syringe, same as you would on a tube of caulking. It helps in directing the flow of the adhesive. Smooth's it out as you go. Works on both the rim or the underside of the striking surface.

I love those 4 am light bulb moments.

So you fill it up, use it that time around, and throw it away?  Or does it push the glue through well enough to reuse it?

I started using 3 ml syringes. Pull the plunger all the way out and then put as much goop into the tube bu holding the syringe barrel tight to three end of the goop neck. I throw them away after one use because they are so cheap. Way easier than the bamboo skewer pieces I was using initially

The syringe is the way I use. If you go to Walgreens to the pharmacy desk they will just give them to you, they are used to give kids liquid medicine. I just put in under a half inch of goop. Apply it and then I squirt the excess on a paper towel, pull the syringe apart and push a toothpick through the end to clean it a little bit. When it dries you can just grab the little bit that is left and it will pull all out. As you know I have only done a couple pots but am still on my first syringe.

Do yourself a favor and get a syringe. Like mentioned before. 1/2'' of glue in the tube will glue one sound board and one surface. If you have two calls to glue up. Put 1'' of goop in. Once done push the excess glue out and pop the plunger out. Twist a paper towel in to get tube clean and tooth pick for small hole. Easiest way I know to glue turkey pots.

Good stuff gents. Glad my 4am idea turned into a better answer. ;)

I didn't want to buy a bunch of tubes to throw away after one use. I will get a couple and keep them clean with a toothpick.

The rubber plunger in the syringe can easily be cleaned up with a paper towel and acetone.  The tube of the syringe, like John says, can easily be cleaned with a little swishing of acetone and wadding up a paper towel and twisting it in there.  Once the acetone come in contact with goop, the goop sort of turns to a rubbery booger that can be removed fairly easy.  I usually get 15-20 pots glued up with a single syringe.

+1 on the syringes. Best thing about them is they are the only thing I've found in this hobby that are free! You can get several uses out of each one if you squeeze out the excess and use the toothpick through the tip method as mentioned.
