Matched pair, herloom wood.
« on: August 04, 2015, 08:54:19 PM »
Hi gang!
Been a while since I posted up anything.  I'm re-energized, did a lot of research on my finish, and got motivated to get some calls done...

This is a matched pair, for a friend, made of some wood that he has been saving for over 30 years.  Black walnut and cherry.  Man was it dry!

I struggled with the decision as on what finish I would use, so I went real old school. A hot hand rubbed 100% pure Tung oil finish, followed by a tough wax finish.   This pair is as close to being fully waterproof, and acid resistant as a piece of wood can be.  This wood just soaked it up all the way through, literally the first coat inside the exhaust had oil seeping through to the outside.  I kept putting on coats once a day until it would absorb no more.  Non toxic and smells good too.  It is part of the wood now, and flexes and moves with the wood as it ages.  Took a full 30 days to cure.

Yes, I'm grinning.

Good stuff right there.  Great job on the photo and it's setup.

Wow Doug!  Those are beautiful.  30 days would definitely be a lesson in patience.

30 day wait time drives me crazy!  :stuart: :winkiss:  I just start another call and keep stacking them up on the drying rack.

It looks like the wait was well worth it.  Great job on the calls. Love seeing your flutes you crank out.  Keep it up
