Need help in wood ID....
« on: May 23, 2015, 07:57:15 AM »
I was in Hawaii back in 2012 and bought a small log of what I was told was Koa, but this isn't Koa.  Can anyone help id this.  I'm thinking it might be Milo.

Looked like english walnut to me from the beginning, but I didn't know what koa looked like, so I didn't say anything.

Koa is more amber to reddish.  I don't know if English walnut grows in Hawaii?

Does it have a smell? Could be Milo. I think it looks a little bit like Monkey Pod. What about a picture with some oil rubbed on it? Might help a little.

I think it also looks like Camphor from this site - http://www.mauiguild.com/Woods/

yep, from what I've read.  I found a website to the Maui's Woodworkers club, and sent them a message.  Hopefully I'll hear something from them.

Look a whole lot like Olivewood, but I don't think you can get it that big.

Nothing yet.  Not getting my hopes up.  I have however been researching the interweb, and I'm 99%  sure it is koa.  It's  not as hard as I thought.  I was just having problems with my band saw, but I have found a couple of web sites that show pics of koa, and several pics are almost identical to my stuff.  Apparently koa has a very wide range of colors and grades.  The stuff I have seems to be less abundant.  I even found some pics of the bark, and it was very similar to what was on my piece when I brought it home.  Also, I was able to verify with 100% certainty,  that the 2nd piece of wood I brought home was indeed Milo.  Found a pic of it and it was exactly the same as my piece, including the redish hues.  Had only enough of it to make 1 pot blank and 1 striker blank.  Pot I made tonight, and this stuff is a dream to work with.  Gonna turn the striker tomorrow, and get some finish on all the pieces.

It's gonna make some pretty pots and strikers, whatever it is.

I'm  almost 100% certain it is Koa.  I did alot of research on the web, and found several sites that showed some pics of koa with the same coloration as my pieces.  Several of those sites were retailers in Hawaii.  Apparently koa has a wide spectrum of color.  Most of it is a more darker reddish color.  I found pics of the bark too, and it was virtually the same as the bark on my piece.  Seemed like most of the stuff I saw for sale on the web was highly figured stuff.  Also found out there is 3 different grading levels, which all 3 grade the figure.  My stuff doesn't have any figure, but the grain is awesome.   Thanks for all the input.

Grunt tubes are all finished up.  Turkey pot calls and strikers are done, and the pots are in glue up stages.  I'll have finished pics in a couple days.
