Very nice bowl David!! The benefit is that by working with pine you get to learn how to make scraping cuts & sand everything smooth!!

Thanks guys!

HaMeR, I HATE PINE. Lol. It doesn't matter how sharp your tools are, it tears out. You can't spin it fast either because of the size.....

You don't have to like turning it David. It's a good wood to learn shearing & scraping cuts on. It can also help you with your tool sharpening. Pine is a different animal on the lathe than it is when worked flat. Just keep doing what you're doing. It seems to be working for you.

Looks great David.

I can't help but point out that your socket looks like the edge is on a knot.  Knots can fall out or break out pretty easy.    Then a failure of the socket is possible.  A piece that large would make that more likely.  Be careful, having a droopy lip because you took a piece of wood to the dome, at high speed, will not impress the ladies.

Thanks.

I really can't help that, because there is a knot in EVERY 2x4 made. lol. I turned all of this at 300 rpm, and took about 3 LIGHT cuts at 600 to get it smoothed out.

When your doing your glue up, position the pieces with so you have clear peices in the middle :).  Your right though, pine is full of knots.  They run havaok on a chain mortise.

I'm not criticizing.  Like I said, the piece turned out very good.   It has has good glue joints, turned well, sanded well, and finished well.  I like its look too.  The shape is clean and how the knots break the clear spots.
