Thanks! And a couple of my first calls
« on: April 25, 2015, 10:28:12 AM »
I bought my first lathe about a month ago because I wanted to experiment with making my own turkey calls as a hobby. I have browsed this site extensively, and with your help I have been able to turn 7 so far. The sound is acceptable, but I look forward to learning how to refine it. I just wanted to say thank you to all of you that share information so freely; it is a tremendous benefit to beginners like me! Here are pics of a couple from my first run.

Welcome! Where are you from, there might be a member close to you that can help with the difficult stuff?

Those look really good! How thick are they? What type of wood? 3" or 3-1/2"? Addicted yet?

Very nice. Be sure to keep your first call so you can look back as you progress.

Thanks for the compliments.

Lon, I'm from Port Royal, KY. It's a small town northeast of Louisville. The one on the left is oak crotch, and the right one is walnut. The crotch piece was a pretty gnarly blank, so it has far different dimensions than my others. I don't have my notebook handy, but I believe it's thickness is somewhere in the .6's, with just enough pedestal for me to get a grip on with my 4 jaw. I didn't think it would turn out, but I liked the look so figured I'd give it a try. I actually really like the sound. It's a tad higher pitched and can get very loud. The walnut one is just over 3/4, somewhere in the .8's from memory. They are both 3 1/2 slate over glass. This new hobby has definitely consumed most of my free time, so addicted is probably a fitting description!

They look great!

All the combinations and possibilities have started to consume all my spare time also.
