I mentioned it because I had just bought one from a custom maker who had a national magazine article written about him and the call. He only makes the copper call in 3" and uses the steel washer. Mine sounds great.

Well thanks Ron...it was a great idea! Only thing I'll change is using 1/2" washer to match the center hole. I made two and they are both awesome!

Has anyone tried an aluminum disc like the ones Grassy Creek sells for a sound board?  Or maybe just the lid of a vegetable can or soup can for a sound board? 

It might be an idea for playing with, a copper playing surface and a tin can lid for the soundboard.  Both would be easy to remove, no breakage problem with copper or a tin can lid.  It would be a good opportunity to try a lot of different variations with out a lot of cost in broken or messed up slate and glass.
