Cork Turkey Decoy 1.0
« on: April 12, 2015, 04:22:51 PM »
First, let me say I haven't got in any of the cork yet, but I figured I'd start this.

I saw a picture of Vince's turkey decoy a few days ago, and it really got me interested. I have been talking with him on face book and decided I was going to do it. I couldn't find a piece of wood big enough, so I started looking for something else. CORK! I watched a youtube video on it once, and decided I was going to use that. I ordered 3 pieces of cork today that should get me a hen, if I don't screw it up. lol.   I plan on sealing it with Spar, as I cant really afford anymore then the cork.  Any recommendations on paint? How exactly would I paint it? Cover the whole thing with brown, then come back and do the rest? I am going to try making myself a draw knife, if it dont work I will probably buy one.

I am really excited to try this, thanks Vince for the inspiration!!!!!!!

Good luck man!  I am looking forward to your results!  The Working Decoys.net forum may give you some info to read up on about doing a cork decoy.

My wooden decoy is stained with walnut stain, and then I worked it over with te acrlic cradt paints like you buy at a hobby store or walmart. You will use a lot of golds, coppers, browns, and black pearl and white pearl.

Ok, thanks. Could you post some "close-up" pictures of yours? All of the pics in your post are gone. I can't wait to start!!

The website posting those pictures shut down.  They are not lost but will be hard to dig up. It may be quite a while.

Before you start on that high dollar cork.  Get a sheet of builders Styrofoam and make up a block to play with.  Styrofoam works easy, is real forgiving and cheap!!!

I decided to do a wooden head. This is cedar. Let me know what you think. I know it isn't perfect, but it is my first time carving/painting/anything decoy related.

Oh ya, I changed my mind on what I was going to Do. Vince convinced me to do a half strut jake instead of a hen.

Well done so far.  I am looking forward to seeing the rest.  Keep up the good work.

I also like Marvin's idea about the foam.  The foam will be lighter to carry also.

Thanks. I couldn't find any foam that big, but it is a dang good idea.
