New pot call shape - six calls
« on: February 21, 2015, 01:42:09 PM »
I am trying to develop a new shape for pot calls as discussed in prior posts http://thogamecallsforums.com/index.php/topic,21758.0.html and http://thogamecallsforums.com/index.php/topic,21799.0.html
Below are six calls with the new shape I was thinking about - hopefully it isn't a copy of anyone's design, but if so - it is purely coincidence.  These are my first try with Velvit oil - two coats, then buffed and waxed.  I like it.  All six are slate over glass.  I ordered one of the upcoming Vortex 400,000 rpm air powered engravers from SculptingStudio.com - these were stippled with my Pfingst flexible shaft tool that I have from my decoy carving days.  Thanks for looking.

Piece of wood my neighbor had - something like Rojobahr - stippled on the end grain of the pot with a stippled Rojobahr/Pecan striker.  I could not find any information on this wood, but this piece had some sapwood and a worm hole streak.

Curly Cherry with a one-piece Curly Cherry striker.  Cherry strikers don't sound too bad.

Monterillo (Tiger Rosewood) with Monterillo/Pecan striker.  The end grain on this wood is pretty remarkable, but it tears out like crazy.

Curly Cherry with a one-piece stippled Curly Cherry striker

Ambrosia Maple with a one-piece Ambrosia Maple striker - I may need to send a second striker with this call as the maple seems a bit high pitch to me.

Padauk with a cross-grain Padauk/Pecan striker

Nice looking pots for sure!  I really like the deep finger grooves when I'm wearing warmer gloves in early season here in Ohio.

Very nice!  Besides the new shape, the finish looks fantastic!  Good job!

They are all handsome and I'd like to own them all.  However, I vote for number one.

Note to self - with an oil finish, you can't set them on a half-pint paint can to let the finish cure while resting upside down on the sound board pedestal. The pedestal face doesn't cure out and Goop doesn't hold the sound board. Looks like I'm breaking some slate out. Thanks Chad for the shipment that is on its way. I'm ordering some painters pyramids at $6 for 10 each.

Oh No!  Fixable at least but still frustrating.  Kick something soft (Not the dog.  Its not his fault).  It will make you feel better about going back to redo that work.

There are several good glues out there to use such as Goop, Goop, Goop and then there's Goop also.  :hysterical: :hysterical:

I pulled the slate off three so far - it wasn't the finish and it wasn't the Plumbers Goop as that held tight to the wood.  Apparently the all purpose cleaner I grabbed from the cleaning supplies left some sort of film on the glass so the Goop didn't bond. I guess I will always use glass cleaner or good old ammonia in the future. Chipped the edge of the Ambrosia pot removing the slate  :censored:
